Another Day

What I wanted to know today is, does God have any new year’s resolutions.

He told me no, but he did have one that he thought might be good for me. He suggested I resolve to pay no attention to any campaigning for United States President until at least the start of 2008.

It sounds like a good idea, but I don’t know how long I’ll last without breaking it.

Certainly it is made more difficult by extensive radio/television/print coverage of every possible candidate’s posturing and positioning. Do you suppose that god was hinting that you spend too much time plugged into other media and not enough between your own ears?

Well, I suppose that’s possible but I think I spend a fair amount of time “between my own ears.” I don’t want to get too much into second guessing what he was saying here but I do have some thoughts of my own. I think it’s important to know how much time something is worth to you. Spending more time on gathering information for a decision than that decision will ultimately be worth to you is not a good use of your time. Also, spending time gathering information when the information you need is not yet availaible is fruitless. In the case of presidential politics, if you start paying too much attention too early you’ll spend a lot of time learning the positions of candidates that won’t make it to your ballot; that’s not necessarily time that’s wasted, but unless your more involved than the average member of the electorate, it probably is.

So before I go on too long here, let me just say: It’s good to know what’s important to you and to allocate more time to things that are important now and less time now to things that won’t be important until later.
